The municipality of Dugi Rat earlier belonged to the municipality of Poljica. The earlier municipality of Poljica stood in the area of the old Poljica principality divided into three parts:
- Gornja Poljica by Mt Mosor that have always been a symbol of freedom and perseverance to aggressor
- Srednja Poljica known for their diligent people and fertile land
- Donja primorska Poljica facing the hinterland.
The municipality of Dugi Rat belongs to the Donja Poljica. Since this region was once part of the Poljica Republic, this region has significant historic monuments.
ARCHEOLOGICAL FINDINGS
Old Slavic necropolises can also be found, as well as remains of graves at Mt Mosnjica near the Church of Gospe Snjezne at Stomorica, and the old cemetery at Sustipan in Sumpetar.
The Church of St Stephen in the old part of the Sustipan cemetery at Sumpetar and the Church of St Mark at the old cemetery of St Mark at Stare Duce count among the oldest historic monuments of this region.
